This delightfully named area looks across the Tamarki Strait and is suitable for kite surfers and windsurfers who are intermediate or experienced. It is situated in the town of Beachlands, but isn't too far from Auckland either.
The beach is sandy and small, although there is a large flat island which can be reached by walking over the sandbar at low tide. Launching and landing is easy and safe wherever you are, and there are never any crowds here to get in the way. The air temperature ranges from about 15° C in winter to around 23° C in summer, with the water a couple of degrees behind this.
The season is really all year round, but the very best time to be out here is from September to November. The best winds come from the north-east during the afternoons and will exceed 20 knots. The water is shallow and clean, and the surface is flat if you head to the spit which connects with Flat Island or choppy if you go out into the Bay.
You are right on the edge of the town of Beachlands here, and facilities aren't too bad. There is plenty of parking on the streets behind the beach, and there are a few places to buy food and drink. There are also showers and public toilets available.
There are trees to watch out for on the beach if you are launching a kite, and Flat Island can have strong onshore winds that can blow you out to sea if you aren't careful.
